A new initiative has brought together more than 70 practitioners, scientists, and authorities from eight Mediterranean countries to jointly develop effective guidance for marine protected areas (MPAs) across the region. This collaboration was organised under the framework of the Interreg Euro‑MED Green List for Mediterranean Marine Protected Areas programme, with the aim of strengthening marine conservation planning and implementation.
The experts exchanged knowledge and best practices to improve the design, management, and effectiveness of MPAs, addressing common challenges such as ecosystem monitoring, stakeholder engagement, and governance frameworks. By fostering cross‑border cooperation and shared expertise, the initiative supports ongoing efforts to expand and enhance marine protection in the Mediterranean — a region known for its unique biodiversity and high environmental pressures.
