Minister of Tourism Dr. Laura El Khazen Lahoud received a delegation from the Lebanese Environmental Forum, headed by Engineer Malek Ghandour, and including Brigadier General Dr. Hassan Bishroush, Mr. Rafiq Makarim, and Engineer Mohammad Faqih, at the Ministry’s headquarters.
During the meeting, the delegation presented the Forum’s work within the framework of the “Green and Blue 30×30 Network,” which aims to support Lebanon’s international commitment to protect 30 percent of its terrestrial and marine areas by 2030, in line with global efforts to conserve biodiversity and natural resources.
Both sides emphasized the vital role of natural reserves and Hima sites in preserving environmentally sensitive terrestrial and marine areas, considering them a cornerstone for safeguarding Lebanon’s natural heritage and ensuring its sustainability for future generations. They also stressed the importance of promoting a culture of sustainable ecotourism and linking it to inclusive local development.
The discussion highlighted ways to develop rural tourism, Hima trails, and eco-guesthouses as effective tools to showcase Lebanon’s natural diversity and encourage local communities to engage in environmentally responsible development pathways. These initiatives contribute to revitalizing rural and peripheral areas, creating sustainable job opportunities, and improving local economic resources.
Minister Lahoud expressed the Ministry of Tourism’s readiness to cooperate with the Lebanese Environmental Forum within an integrated vision aimed at strengthening Lebanon’s position as a responsible ecotourism destination, balancing environmental protection with the revitalization of tourism across the country.
The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to strengthening coordination among public authorities, environmental organizations, and local communities to achieve the objectives of the 30×30 initiative and translate national commitments into concrete actions that enhance Lebanon’s environmental and economic resilience.
